What’s Wrong with my Dumbo Rat? She has open wounds.?
I have a female Dumbo Rat named Pandora. I have had her for about 6 months. About 3 months ago I started to notice open wounds on her.
At first I thought she was accidently injuring herself in her cage, but since then I have changed cages. The number of the small shallow open wounds have started to grow to covering her entire back, jaw, and neck. They scab over, but somehow, the scabs get scratched off and they never heal, just grow in numbers.
Should I use neosporn? I think also that it may be flea related. Like maybe, she was scratching (like she does alot) and her sharp claws keep nicking her. I have bought some flea spray but I don’t want to use it on her because of her open wounds. Even when I just rinse her in water, she is in pain. Please help! I don’t want to see her suffer anymore!
Currently I have seven rats and one of them is a dumbo. I had the same problem with two of my rats (my dumbo and my Siamese) they were scratching so much that they were creating lesions on the skin. When I took them to the vet they told me that it was a type of lice. Fortunately for me the lice is breed specific and cannot jump to a person but it can jump to other rats. If you look at your rats skin and you don’t see little red bugs (which would be mites) on the skin it could be lice. Either way your going to want to take her to the vet because if it is mites they can actually kill her (by sucking out her blood) and the vet will know right away if they are mites or not. If it is lice they will just give you a medication to give her orally probably once a week for a month and during that time you just want to keep her cage really clean to prevent any lice from coming back. I wouldn’t use any flea medication on them unless it is specifically for rats or small animals because it could be toxic and you want to make sure she has fleas before you put it on her.
